Perfectly Level DIY Floating Shelves

Level DIY floating shelves

Homemade Floating Shelves Use Wobble Wedges ® to Achieve Perfection

Floating shelves are a sophisticated way to add storage capacity in your home without the clutter of metal shelf brackets. There are a variety of floating shelf styles and kits that are available for purchase online. The truly industrious home improvement junkies will opt to build their own floating shelves using basic carpentry skills and tools. However, even the most perfectly built floating shelf may not rest flat against the drywall. Any gaps between the bottom of the shelf and the wall will cause the floating shelf to be out of level. Luckily, Wobble Wedge ® plastic shims provide an easy fix! Our sturdy plastic shims will help you install perfectly level DIY floating shelves.

How to Build a DIY Floating Shelf

DIY floating shelves are constructed with an internal support that gets attached to the wall and an exterior “box” that slips over the support. This style of design creates an incredibly strong shelf without any visible support. If mounted to drywall, use drywall anchors to increase the weight capacity of the shelf. Otherwise, mount the floating shelf into studs for a seemingly indestructible shelf ready to hold your heaviest house plants, books, and decorative items.

Installing a Floating Shelf

Use a level while installing the internal support for your floating shelf. This ensures that the shelf is level from side to side. Once you have mounted the internal support, slip the box that comprises the exterior of the shelf over the support. Use finishing nails to hold the exterior box to the internal support bracket.

Level DIY floating shelves
Trim the plastic shims and they’ll disappear from view!

Level DIY Floating Shelves with Plastic Shims

At this point you may notice that your shelf is level from side to side, but does not sit flush against the wall and is therefore not level from front to back. This could cause items to slide off the shelf and could even pull the shelf off the wall. Place a level on the shelf to see if it dips tilts downward. If your floating shelf is not level, use clear/translucent Wobble Wedges ® plastic shims under the bottom, against the wall, to make your shelf level from front to back. Once you have confirmed with your level that the shelf is now even you can trim the Wobble Wedges ® so they are not visible to the naked eye. Using a marker draw a line on each plastic shim, and then remove it. Trim the Wobble Wedge ® plastic shims to size with scissors or an exacto blade. Replace each plastic shim and recheck the shelf for level.

Congratulations! You built a beautiful floating shelf that is unique and customized to your space. Now it’s perfectly level thanks to Wobble Wedge ® plastic shims!

6. Stabilize Tabletop Decorations

Decorative items on side tables and coffee tables are highly visible, so if they wobble and lean it can be an eyesore. Shimming them with a wad of paper though isn’t going to look good in such a visible location. This is why Mini Wobble Wedges ® plastic shims are perfect to shim these items. Our plastic shims come in a clear plastic that won’t be visible, especially if you trim the shims to size. They will discreetly stabilize all of your tabletop decorations.

7. Prevent Scuffs Marks From Hanging Frames

What do you do when your hanging frames leave scuff marks on your wall? It doesn’t just look bad to have a scuffed wall, if you rent it can mean you’ll get charged for repainting the rooms when you move out. This is a perfect situation to use Mini Wobble Wedge ® plastic shims! The soft/flexible plastic of our shims makes for the ideal buffer between your hanging art and the wall. Read more on our blog “Stop Scuff Marks from Hanging Frames”.

8. Level Houseplants

Don’t let an unsteady houseplant take a tumble from a stray elbow or a curious pet. Most houseplants will survive a fall, but that beautiful pot it was planted in probably won’t! Mini Wobble Wedges ® or our Standard plastic shims can do the trick of stabilizing and leveling plants. Read more in our blog “How to Stop Wobbling Potted Plants”.

9. Level Decorative Ceramic Objects (Bowls, Vases, Sculptures)

Handmade ceramic pieces often have a little wobble from being made by hand. This can mean the special object is less steady, and could be knocked over more easily. Luckily Mini Wobble Wedges ® plastic shims offer a solution, their soft/flexible plastic will delicately hold the ceramic and still keep it level. Cut the plastic shims to the right size to hide them from view.

10. Stabilize Decorative Collections

Lining up decorative collectibles on shelves or in cases is a great way to show off your prized collection. If the items are delicate or unsteady, using a small tapered plastic shim to stabilize them will make it easier to feel safe showing them off. Or if you want to just slightly tilt the items forward to show them off better on a higher shelf, our Wobble Wedges ® are perfect for giving them the best visibility. Simply place a couple of our Mini Wobble Wedges ® or Standard plastic shims underneath the backside of the item and it will gently tilt it into view. This works particularly well for items that are still in their original boxes!

How to Improve a Plant’s Drainage

Choose the Right Pot and Lift It to Improve Drainage

Creating a little jungle of houseplants in your home lets you enjoy greenery all year round. But many people feel like they just kill every plant they try to grow. One of the biggest causes of plant issues is over watering and a lack of good drainage. Poor drainage and root rot can kill a plant very quickly. If your plants suffer from drainage issues, here a few tips to improve a plant’s drainage.

Should I put Rocks in the Bottom of My Pots?

Many people put a layer of rocks in the bottom of their potted plants to “improve drainage.” But this can actually cause more water retention instead of less. The best option is to always use a pot with a drainage hole. The reason is that soil will drain the water it doesn’t need out the bottom and not leave the plant’s roots sitting in water. Rocks in the bottom of your pot can actually keep more of the moisture inside the pot instead of letting it drain out. The only situation where rocks can help is in a pot that doesn’t have a drainage hole. Then a thick layer of rocks can allow water to have some separation from the dirt, but this isn’t ideal. Having a pot that drains into a tray is the best option to prevent root rot.

What kind of Pot and Tray Should I use?

Using pots that don’t have a built in tray is our preferred method. Having a separate tray allows you to see how much extra water the plant has and it keeps the roots of the plant from sitting in too moist soil. Pots that have built-in trays just make it harder to monitor your plant’s water needs. And in our experience tend to hold onto water longer than a pot with a drainage hole.

Improve a Plant's Drainage

So How Do I Improve a Plant’s Drainage?

One issue you might still run into with a pot and separate tray, is that the water still can’t freely drain out the hole in the bottom. We recommend using Wobble Wedge® plastic shims to lift your pots up from the tray, allowing water to freely flow. Use 3 or more Wobble Wedge® plastic shims evenly spaced around the pot to lift it. If the pot is ceramic we recommend using our soft/flexible plastic shims to cushion the pottery. And if the pot is plastic you can use either our hard/rigid or soft/flexible plastic shims. Our plastic shims come in 3 sizes, and the Mini or Standard sizes will work for most pots. But if you need something bigger, you can always use our BigGap™ plastic shims too. All three will work great as an option to lift your pots and improve a plant’s drainage. The reason Wobble Wedge® plastic shims are great for this task is that they are made from a durable plastic that won’t rot or deteriorate when in contact with water. Learn more about fixing wobbling potted plants, including how to stabilize plant stands in our blog post “How to Stop Wobbling Potted Plants”.

10 Uses for BigGap™ Wobble Wedges®

BigGap Wobble Wedges

Our Biggest Plastic Shim Can Be Used For All Kinds of Jobs

Our BigGap™ Wobble Wedges® are our tallest plastic shims and are available in both hard/rigid and soft/flexible plastic. They come as a double-wide shim that can easily be cut and/or snapped into two individual shims. This means they can be used in a lot of applications. Here are just a few examples of how to use our BigGap Wobble Wedges:

1. Shimming Big Spaces

Our plastic shims come in three sizes: Mini, Standard, and BigGap™. The Standard is .25” tall, while the BigGap™ is .48”. So if you have a space larger than .25”, you can either stack two Standard wedges or use a BigGap™. Just like all of our plastic shims they can be safely stacked because of the patented interlocking ridges. And if you have a space that is .48” or larger you want to grab a BigGap™ or two. BigGaps™ make it easy to fill a really large space, as they can be stacked as high as you need!

2. Stop Table Legs Sinking Into Moist Lawns

If you’ve set up an outdoor get together or are a catering company you know that soft ground means table legs sinking into the grass. To stop this you need to spread out the weight of the table over a larger area than the small table leg. We recommend using BigGaps™ to do this. Place either a single-wide BigGap™ or the double-wide version under the table feet to spread out the weight and keep your table from toppling over.

3. Scraping Off Gunk

One of our favorite creative uses for BigGap Wobble Wedges is using them to scrape off gunk! The hard plastic makes it easy to scrape off sticky labels, build up on your grill, and many other sticky situations too. The ridges on our plastic shims work together to repeatedly scrape the surface, making it easier to get off stuck-on gunk!

4. Propping Open Appliance Doors

After your dishwasher or washing machine runs a cycle it’s a good idea to prop open the door to keep them from getting musty. This is easily done with a BigGap™ plastic shim! Simply wedge the BigGap™ into the door and allow the weight of the door to hold it in place. This keeps the door propped open just enough to allow airflow, but not too much that the door will swing open.

BigGap Wobble Wedges propping open a washing machine door.

5. Level Concrete Blocks or Pavers

Hard plastic Wobble Wedges® are great for working with concrete. Because the hard plastic doesn’t react with water or concrete, you won’t get any discoloration or deterioration like with other shims. BigGaps™ are ideal for leveling pavers to make a walkway or stacking concrete blocks while building a wall

6. Door Stop

The BigGap™ is our tallest plastic shim at 0.48”. This makes it tall enough to be used as a door stop. And if it’s not quite tall enough for your door, with our patented interlocking ridges you can stack two BigGaps™ and they will stay securely stacked to keep your door propped open.

7. Lift Potted Plants for Better Drainage

If your potted plants are sitting flat on the ground, lifting them up will help water flow out and improve drainage. Using BigGaps™ in a “flat stack” (see image), place 2-4 stacks (depending on size) evenly spaced under your planter or pot. This will evenly lift the pot up so water doesn’t stay trapped under it leading to root rot.

Two BigGap Wobble Wedges stacked tapered end to wide end to make a flat stack

8. Stop Compression Marks

Similar to keeping tables from sinking in grass, Wobble Wedge® plastic shims can be used to stop indoor furniture from leaving compression marks. Use BigGaps™ underneath table legs or furniture feet to disperse the weight. This will prevent those hard to remove carpet indentations. Learn more in this blog post.

9. Keep You Grill Stable

Most patios and decks aren’t perfectly level. So if you’re working at a hot grill you’ll want to stabilize it for safety reasons. You can use BigGap Wobble Wedges as chock blocks to stop caster feet from rolling. Or to level your grill if one foot doesn’t make good contact with your deck. Learn more about this on our blog post about how to stabilize grills.

10. Leveling Garage Workbenches

Garage floors are set up to drain to the door or to a floor drain. This means that they have a slight pitch to them so that water flows. It also means that almost anything in your garage is going to lean because the floor isn’t level. When working at your workbench you want it to be stable so you can safely use tools. We recommend using hard/rigid BigGaps™ to bring your workbench up to level. Learn more on our blog, “How to Level a Workbench.”

How to Stop Wobbling Potted Plants

Steady Your Houseplants with Wobble Wedge® Plastic Shims

A beautiful indoor plant jungle can transform a home into your own private oasis. And caring for houseplants is a wonderful way to de-stress and feel connected to nature. If you have a plant that is unsteady or wobbles it can be easily knocked to the floor by a stray elbow or a curious pet. Most houseplants will survive a fall, but that beautiful pot it was planted in probably won’t! So what to do when you have an unsteady houseplant? Here’s how to stop wobbling potted plants with the help of Wobble Wedges®.

Stop Wobbling Potted Plants

There are many types of planters and pots that your houseplants can live in. From ceramic to plastic, some with attached trays and some with separate ones. Luckily if your potted plant rocks back and forth it doesn’t matter which kind of pot it’s in. Our solution will work with them all. You might be tempted to grab a piece of cardboard or a wooden shim, but if these options get wet they can grow mildew or rot. Using a plastic shim to stabilize your potted plant is the best option.

Our Wobble Wedge® plastic shims aren’t affected by water. So they can be used to shim the pot in the water tray or under the tray. Simply take a soft/flexible plastic shim in the color of your choice (black, white, or clear/translucent), and place it under the edge of your pot. The soft plastic will cushion the pot and grip it at the same time, putting a stop to your wobbling potted plant.

Stop Wobbling Potted Plants

How to Level a Plant Stand

If your plants are on wire or wooden plant stands, these too can become unsteady. This is especially common with wire plant stands, where one or more legs is shorter than the rest. Take your plant out of its stand and rock the stand to determine which leg is shorter. Place one or more soft plastic shim under the feet of your plant stand. If you want to make sure it’s level, get a small level to check it front to back and side to side. If it leans to one side you will need to use more than one plastic shim to get it level.

Luckily Wobble Wedge® plastic shims come in three sizes, so you can get the exact height you need. A Mini Wobble Wedge® is 0.16” high, a Standard is 0.25”, and a BigGap™ wedge is 0.48” tall. If you need to combine them to get the perfect height you can safely do this thanks to our patented interlocking ridges. They allow Wobble Wedge® plastic shims to be safely stacked, no slipping! Once you’ve fixed the wobble, return your plant to the stand. Voila, you’ve learned how to stop wobbling potted plants!

Stop Annoying Compression Marks in Carpet

Compression Marks in Carpet

Plastic Shims can help prevent unsightly indentations from furniture

Heavy furniture can leave some serious indentations in carpet! Small feet on furniture put a lot of pressure on the carpet fibers, compressing them under the full weight of the item. But how to stop these annoying compression marks in carpet? Spread out the weight of the furniture over a larger area. This is where Wobble Wedge® hard/rigid plastic shims come in! Read below for info on how to fix the compression marks you already have in your carpet, and how our plastic shims can prevent new ones.

How to Fix Compression Marks in Carpet

If you’ve moved your furniture around in a carpeted room you’ve definitely had to deal with compression marks. These annoying spots where the fibers of your carpet just won’t “bounce back” like they should. There are two common suggestions for fixing a compression mark. Most common is using ice cubes. Place an ice cube (or more than one depending on the size of the indent) in the compressed area. Let it melt, after melting the water should have expanded the compressed fibers. Blot up the excess water and fluff the carpet with your fingers. The second option is to use steam. Take a damp towel and place it over the indentation, use a clothes iron set to medium (with steam) and iron over the towel for about a minute. DO NOT iron the carpet directly, as the iron will melt the carpet! The steam will do much the same thing as the ice, and expand the fibers of the carpet. Then fluff with your fingers.

Compression Marks in Carpet

How to Use Plastic Shims to Prevent Compression Marks in Carpet

But how do you prevent compression marks in your carpet to begin with? One suggestion is to move each furniture item a few inches every couple of weeks. But that just seems like way too much work to do forever! The better solution is to disperse the weight of the furniture item over a larger area. Narrow legs on furniture put all of the weight down in one tiny spot, compressing the carpet and leaving a mark. A wider foot spreads out the weight over a larger area and doesn’t compress the carpet as much. This is why using a Wobble Wedge® plastic shim under the feet of your furniture can prevent compression marks. Simply take a hard/rigid standard Wobble Wedge® plastic shim and place it under each foot. Our hard/rigid plastic shims come in both clear and black plastic, so they can blend into your decor. And Wobble Wedge® hard/rigid plastic shims can take +2,000 lbs of force, so even your heaviest armoire or display case can easily be supported.
