Shim Basics
What is a shim, and what is it used for?
A shim is a thin, tapered wedge you slide into a gap to level, support or tighten something. People use shims to stop wobbly tables, level furniture and appliances on uneven floors, steady rocking toilets, and set cabinets, doors and windows during installation. Shims are traditionally wood, but plastic shims like Wobble Wedges® don't rot, compress or split, so they last much longer.
What can I put under a wobbly table to level it?
A shim. Find the short leg by pressing on each corner, then slide a shim under it until the table sits flat and stops rocking. Trim or stack shims for the exact height. On smooth floors a Flexible Wobble Wedge grips without sliding; on patios or uneven stone a Rigid Wobble Wedge holds its shape.
Which shims are best: plastic, rubber, composite or wood?
For leveling furniture and fixtures, molded plastic shims are the best all-rounder. Wood can split, compress and rot. Rubber grips well but can squash under heavy loads. Composite shims are tough but long, made for construction framing rather than table legs. Wobble Wedges® are precision-molded plastic that interlocks when stacked, comes in Rigid and Flexible versions and is reusable.
What's the difference between rigid and flexible shims?
Rigid shims are hard and hold their shape under heavy loads, which makes them best for cabinets, appliances and furniture on concrete, brick, patios or carpet. Flexible shims are softer: they grip slick floors, cushion delicate surfaces and can be trimmed with scissors. Wobble Wedge makes both, and they're designed to stack together.
How do I level furniture on an uneven floor?
Set the piece where it will live, then check it with a level or by pressing each corner to find where it rocks. Slide a shim under the low leg or corner and add or stack shims until it's level. Interlocking Wobble Wedges let you build exact heights, from a sliver with a Mini wedge to wide gaps with BigGap™ wedges.
How much weight can shims hold?
It depends on the material and design. Thin or hollow plastic shims can crack or flatten under heavy loads. Rigid Wobble Wedges® are made from tough polypropylene, and combinations of Rigid Wobble Wedges can support over 2,000 lbs, enough for cabinets, aquariums, appliances and commercial equipment.
Should I use shims or adjustable leveling feet?
Adjustable feet work when furniture has threaded inserts and the floor is only slightly off. Shims work under anything, with no tools or drilling, and handle bigger or changing gaps, which is why restaurants and contractors keep them on hand. Wobble Wedges also fix the gap when leveling feet run out of adjustment.
What is the best way to shim a toilet?
A rocking toilet usually means the floor under it isn't flat. Slide shims under the base where it lifts until it sits solid, trim any excess, then caulk around the base. Flexible White or Flexible Clear Wobble Wedges are the go-to for this job because they grip tile, cushion porcelain and trim cleanly. See our guide: How to Fix a Wobbly Toilet. If the toilet is still loose or leaking, check the wax ring and flange too.
Fixing Specific Wobbles
How do I level a washing machine, refrigerator or other appliance?
Start with the appliance's own leveling feet. When the floor is too uneven for the feet to reach, slide a rigid shim under the low foot to close the gap. Rigid Wobble Wedges are moisture-proof and support heavy loads, and stacking them lets you match the gap exactly. A level appliance also vibrates and walks less. Step-by-step: How to Level a Washing Machine.
How do I stop wobbly restaurant tables on a patio?
Patio stone, brick and concrete are uneven, so tables rock no matter how you turn them. Keep a few Rigid Wobble Wedges at the host stand and slide one under the short leg when you seat guests. On smooth indoor floors like tile, wood or polished concrete, Flexible Wobble Wedges grip better. Clear and black wedges blend in with most table bases.
How do I level a folding or banquet table on grass?
Use a wide, rigid shim so the leg doesn't sink into soft ground. BigGap™ Wobble Wedges fill bigger gaps on sloped lawns, and the Double BigGap gives each leg a wider footprint on damp grass. Stack wedges to make up a steep slope.
Can plastic shims be used outdoors or in wet areas?
Yes, and that's where they beat wood. Rigid Wobble Wedges are made of moisture-proof polypropylene that won't shrink, swell or rot, so they work on patios and decks, under hot tubs and pool equipment, and around plumbing.
How do I level a pool table or hot tub?
Check level across the length and width, then shim the low corners or legs a little at a time. Heavy items like pool tables and hot tubs need shims that won't compress, which is why rigid plastic beats wood here. Combinations of Rigid Wobble Wedges support over 2,000 lbs. Step-by-step guides: How to Level a Pool Table and How to Level an Outdoor Hot Tub.
What size shim do I need for a large gap?
Measure the gap at its widest point. Standard shims cover everyday wobbles, and Mini shims handle tiny or hidden gaps. For bigger gaps, BigGap™ Wobble Wedges measure 3.52" x 1.13" x 0.48" (single) or 3.52" x 2.39" x 0.48" (double) at a 7.13° angle. All three sizes interlock, so you can stack them to fill almost any gap.
How do I keep stacked shims from slipping?
Smooth shims slide apart under load, which is why stacked wood shims often work loose. Wobble Wedges have a patented deep offset ridge pattern that makes them interlock in any combination or orientation. Once loaded, they don't slip, slide or twist apart. Wobble Wedge calls this Securely Stackable.
Can I cut a plastic shim to size?
Flexible plastic shims trim easily. Cut Flexible Wobble Wedges with ordinary scissors or a sharp utility knife for a clean, hidden fit, which is great for toilets and visible furniture. Rigid Wobble Wedges are built for strength, so pick the right size or stack them instead of cutting.
Will shims scratch hardwood or tile floors?
Wood and hard plastic shims can scuff delicate surfaces. Flexible Wobble Wedges are softer and cushion the surface, so they're the best choice on hardwood, tile, stone and porcelain. For the best of both, put a flexible wedge against the delicate surface and a rigid one on top for strength.
About Wobble Wedges
What is a Wobble Wedge?
A Wobble Wedge® is a patented, interlocking plastic shim used to level, stabilize and secure tables, furniture, toilets, appliances, equipment and more. It's made by Wobble Wedge, a family-owned company in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, owned and operated by Kevin and Robin Miller. Wobble Wedges come in Rigid and Flexible versions and in Mini, Standard and BigGap™ sizes, and have been made in the USA since 1985.
Who makes Wobble Wedges, and where are they made?
Wobble Wedges were invented in 1985 and are made today by Wobble Wedge, a family-owned company in Highlands Ranch, Colorado, owned and operated by Kevin and Robin Miller. Everything about them is 100% American-made: the engineering, tooling, resin, production, printing and packaging. Read the full story on our About Us page.
What makes Wobble Wedges different from regular shims?
Most shims are plain tapered triangles. Wobble Wedges are precision-engineered and protected by two U.S. patents. They interlock and stay put when stacked (Securely Stackable), have a Grab-Bar™ for easy placement and retrieval, come in Rigid and Flexible versions in three nesting sizes, and Rigid combinations support over 2,000 lbs.
Which Wobble Wedge should I buy?
Match the wedge to the surface and the load. Flexible: smooth floors, toilets, delicate surfaces and anything you want to trim. Rigid: heavy loads, outdoor or wet areas, carpet, brick and concrete. Mini: tiny or hidden gaps. BigGap™: large gaps and soft ground. Not sure? A Variety Pack gives you every size and type to test.
What industries use Wobble Wedges?
Restaurants and cafes use them for tables, plumbers for toilets and pipes, and contractors for cabinets, trim, countertops and windows. In industry, they show up in aircraft paint rooms and panel tooling, furniture manufacturing jigs, commercial glass installation and HVAC equipment leveling, where they also cut vibration.
What sizes and colors do Wobble Wedges come in?
Wobble Wedges come in three interlocking sizes: Mini, Standard and BigGap™. Rigid wedges come in clear and black. Flexible wedges come in white, black and clear, so they can match or disappear against most furniture, fixtures and floors. Packs range from small variety packs to 300-count bulk packs.
Can I use Flexible and Rigid Wobble Wedges together?
Yes. All Wobble Wedges interlock with each other, whatever the size or type. A common pro trick is a flexible wedge against a delicate surface for grip and protection, with a rigid wedge behind it for strength. Woodworkers use the same combo against a clamp head.
How do I remove a Wobble Wedge that's pushed in too far?
Use the Grab-Bar™, the raised ridge on the thick end of every Wobble Wedge. Grip it with your fingers to pull the wedge back out or adjust it. In tight spots, needle-nose pliers grab it easily. It's one of the small details that makes Wobble Wedges reusable.
